Around the Quad

What’s Bruin? by Judy Prather

Everybody loves the appealing aroma of a pot of freshly brewed coffee, and now you can show your love of Baylor while you’re enjoying your morning coffee. The Independence Coffee Co., located in Independence, Texas (yes, the one where Baylor was founded) has launched a new line of Baylor coffees, and when you buy them you’re helping the university. To find out how, read on. What's Bruin?

Revised and Renewed by Elizabeth Herring

When the June issue of Between the Lines featured a story about the renovation of Kokernot Hall (New Digs), many alumni wrote to us wanting to see the results. Well, here they are. The new Kokernot houses faculty, students enrolled in Engaged Learning Groups, Air Force ROTC students, and--gasp!--both men and women. Revised and Renewed.

Voter Turnout by Ida Jamshidi

It seems like every celebrity in the country is hooked into the “Rock the Vote” effort, and now Baylor is on board too. Participating in the nationwide effort to motivate young people to vote, Baylor is hosting several “Rock the Vote” events this fall. Voter Turnout.

Baylor Family

Not Your Father’s Rotary Club

Corbett Daniel Parker ’03 is making news in Houston by beginning a popular new Rotary Club aimed at young business professionals. Along with Parker, five other Baylor Bears are charter members of the group, and three of those are officers. Not Your Father’s Rotary Club.

In Unison

Dr. Donald Bailey was recently presented the Texas Choirmaster Award, the most prestigious award given by the Texas Choral Directors Association (TCDA). Bailey recently retired from Baylor, where he was the director of choral activities and the Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Music. He conducted the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Singers, and Choral Union and taught conducting. In its fifty-three year history, the TCDA has only given this award to ten conductors, and three of those served as director of choral activities in the Baylor University School of Music. In addition to Bailey, the late Hugh Sanders and the late Euell Porter also received the award.

Young Achievers

Baylor graduates are known for making a positive impact in the world, but some of them get it done a little more quickly than others. To celebrate those early achievers, the Baylor Alumni Association each year presents the Outstanding Young Alumni Award to deserving graduates under the age of forty. To meet this year’s recipients--from surgeons to singers--read the full story. Young Achievers.

Homecoming Highlights

This year’s Homecoming celebration will be October 31 to November 2 on the Baylor campus, and it’s a time you don’t want to miss if you can help it. Everyone enjoys the bonfire, parade, and football game, but for some graduates this year’s Homecoming will have special meaning because they are hitting a big reunion year. On the Homecoming website, you can relive some memories with the Class of 1983, which will be celebrating its twenty-fifth reunion at a dinner on Friday night. Class of 1983.
