BAA News

Homecoming 2008
Homecoming is almost here! On Friday, October 31--Halloween, of course--alumni will return to Baylor to meet friends, tour buildings old and new, and revisit their college days. One of the traditions on the Friday of Homecoming is the Baylor Alumni Association's annual meeting, held in a new location at Truett Seminary's Powell Chapel at 3 p.m. In addition to a Q&A with Dr. David Garland, Baylor's interim president, the BAA will present the W. R. White Meritorious Service Awards, given this year to Howard Dudgeon III, Madelyn Jones, Ann Reed, David Malone, and Bill Underwood. For more on the meeting and these distinguished honorees, go to Annual Meeting 2008.

For a complete schedule of events, check out the Homecoming website, which features information about reunions, Chamber's Homecoming apparel, the parade, and much more.

Fall Baylor Line
If you missed the fall issue of the Baylor Line, go to the Line website for news and sports stories, alumni profiles, and web exclusives, including a photo gallery of D. M. Edwards's boot collection and an in-depth look at Judge Baylor. The fall feature stories include a reader-response on building unity at Baylor. Go to the Baylor Line Forum to share your views on unity within the Baylor family.

Eating Out
On October 4, the Baylor Alumni Association hosted a special tailgating event before Baylor's game against Oklahoma. While the score wasn't what we hoped for, the crowd--including Torchbearers, board members, past presidents, and donors--had a great time visiting and eating breakfast burritos from George's. For more pictures, like this one of Dutch Schroeder '49 and Betty Rogers Bryant '58, click here for a photo gallery: Eating Out.

The Baylor Family

Texas Monthly: The Working Life
The September 2008 issue of Texas Monthly featured a story about Ben Edwards, a 1997 Baylor graduate who is a solo family practice physician at Garza County Health Clinic, in Post, and the only physician serving the county. "I've been amazed during my three years in practice how much of a visit can be devoted to stress issues, work issues, relationship issues, just life issues," Edwards told the magazine. "To be effective, you need to listen. You have to take time." To access the story, go to September Texas Monthly. And click here for a special subscription offer for Baylor alums, just $6 for a year!

Around the Quad

On a Mission by Meg Cullar
On October 13, missionaries from Taiwan, Ghana, India, and China came to Baylor for the annual Missions Week. During their visit, they attended a prayer breakfast, spoke at Chapel, and visited classes to highlight their work and to make students more culturally and globally aware. On a Mission

Ferguson-Clark Lecture
John Grogan was a columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer when he wrote a column saying goodbye to his not-so-well-behaved, but dearly loved, Labrador retriever, Marley. When he received hundreds of e-mails and voicemails, he knew he had an important story to tell. This story became Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog, a number-one New York Times bestseller.

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18 at Waco Hall, Grogan will deliver the 2008 Ferguson-Clark Lecture titled, "Write What Is In Your Heart and Success Will Follow." The annual lecture is a benefit for the Baylor Library. Patron tickets are $50 and include a reception and book signing with the author immediately following the lecture. General admission tickets are $5. To purchase tickets, go to: baylor.edu/lib/.
