Business Buzz

The State of Colorado's Small Business Administration has named Shawnee McCoy Huckstep '94 its Small Business Person of the Year. She is the president and CEO of TechWise, which she cofounded with her husband, Arran '95, while they were still living in Waco. They now live in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they focus their business on technology and military training. In April, TechWise, which has more than 100 full-time employees in nine states, won a contract to support training exercises for Division West at Fort Hood.

Artful Display
From June 6-28, the Fort Worth Community Arts Center will be featuring a fifty-year retrospective of the work of Baylor art professor Karl Umlauf. Titled "Karl Umlauf: Natural Evolution," the exhibit includes paintings and drawings, some of which have never been seen before. The retrospective also has a gallery featuring the work of Umlauf's students, including Lauren Smith '04, Sally Taylor Pryor '05, and Jennifer Dunlap '04. Past students will be on hand on Friday, June 20, for "An Evening with Karl and his Students." For more information, go to Fort Worth Community Arts Center.
Around the Quad New Digs by Claire St. Amant

For the first time in two decades, Kokernot Hall is getting a facelift. Over the summer, the residence hall is being refurbished for incoming freshmen. Male and female students involved in Baylor's Engaged Learning Groups will be housed there, in separate areas, along with two faculty in residence. Stop the Presses
The Houston Press Club has named the Baylor Lariat the Best Student Newspaper for 2007. In its assessment of the paper, the Press Club said, "Pound for pound, this small staff is churning out readable, interesting, and often edgy and controversial stories. . . . Where other student newspapers rely heavily--too heavily--on covering the latest speakers on campus and the latest pronouncements from the administration, this fine staff goes after real news with gusto." Cycling Through by Claire St. Amant
It's been a month of hard work, long hours, and lots of miles, but five Baylor students bicycling from Texas to Alaska this summer are still enthusiastic about the road ahead. The Alive Campaign, which began after a close friend of the students contemplated suicide, evolved into their 4,500-mile journey to raise awareness about suicide prevention. Along the way, the students are filming a documentary and also keeping an online record of their experiences. To read a Q&A with Alyson Erickson, the only female rider, click here: Cycling Through
