Around the Quad

Learning Community by Elizabeth Herring

The newly renovated Kokernot Hall will be home this fall to the students enrolled in Baylor's three new Engaged Learning Groups (ELG). Going for the Gold by Meg Cullar

Amidst the pageantry and competition of this summer’s Olympic Games, five Baylor graduates are in Beijing, China, but for an entirely different purpose. As part of a ministry called Action Ministries International, they are able to witness to an international community during the world’s largest sporting event. Prior to leaving for his fourth Olympics, Donnie Martinez ’83 (pictured, far right) talked to Between the Lines about his past experiences and what he hoped to find in China. Going for the Gold

Volunteer of the Year

Edna Penny Bridges, MS ’66, EdD ’76, has been named the 2008 Volunteer of the Year by the Texas Volunteer Conference for her work as a volunteer in a residential setting. For the last eleven years, she has volunteered at Park Place Manor in Belton, where she serves coffee every morning at 6:30 a.m. In an interview with the Temple Daily Telegram, Bridges--who sometimes comes dressed as Minnie Pearl--explained that it’s the residents who keep her coming back every morning. “I try to make every day a special day for them. It’s so gratifying to see their faces light up.”

In 1993, Bridges retired as director of elementary education at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor after twenty-six years of service. She and her husband, Bobby, live in Temple.
